I’ve always been a big fan of movies based on actual events like “Goodfellas,” “Erin Brockovich,” “The Perfect Storm,” etc. Last night I sat down to watch “The Fourth Kind.” The film, although a work of fiction, is allegedly based on a true story and uses what are claimed to be actual clips and records made by a psychologist from Nome, Alaska, Dr. Abigail Tyler (played by Mila Jovovich.) In the beginning of the movie the actors come right out and warn the viewers that they are about to see disturbing, real-life footage but I’m not so sure I believe this. Sure, you do see interviews and some “images” of what could be extraterrestrials but every single time the plot thickens and your heart begins to race with cinematic anxiety the video feed either goes static or blurry.
Still, this flick is relatively entertaining and has decent performances by Mila Jovovich (who I always call “Lilu Dallas Multipass” from “The 5th Element”) and Elias Koteas AKA Casey Jones from “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!” Overall, I give “The Fourth Kind” 3/5 stars- worth seeing but you won’t miss much if you never get around to it.
