Perspective & Connection

There’s so much to enjoy, appreciate & admire when it comes to music and art but what I find the most fascinating is the ability to experience a piece of work at one point in your life and then have a completely different experience at another point in life all based on your current perspective.

Part of this personal epiphany obviously relates to growing and maturing as a person & experiencing the ups and down of life; unless you’ve experienced what the artist is trying to portray how can you really relate to it on the same level?  Some things, no matter how hard you try, can’t be told to someone…they just have to feel it and figure it out for themselves.  With music and art, I find this to be incredibly and exceptionally true.

For me, I’ve been picking up old albums I haven’t listened to in years, watching movies that used to be my favorites as a kid and re-reading books that I was once forced to read in school but now actually enjoy.   There are so many layers to each these things that I missed the first time around.  Whether its deeper meaning or simply a wailing guitar solo in the background I failed to notice back in ‘99, its like feeling everything again for the first time.

Try doing this for yourself sometime.  Try and look at things, not just music and art, from a different  perspective.  Its such an amazing feeling to see things you may not have understood or noticed the first time around.  It does take some effort, though.  Its not like these little nuances are going to jump out and scream “notice me!”  Bring the metaphorical walls down and see what you may have been unintentionally blocking out!
