We all had an amazing time at CHURCH this past weekend sponsoring the Toussaint the Liberator & Meta and the Cornerstones show. CHURCH, “Boston’s neighborhood sanctuary,” is a great music venue right near Fenway Park tucked away on Kilmarnock St. So many good friends, good music and good times. I feel like I say the same thing about every show we go to/sponsor but its true! We never have a bad time going out in this great city.

In other news, we recently had a custom Les Paul guitar donated to us. At our live events we’ve been playing games to win free tees and each time you spend $5 on the game you are entered in to win the grand prize. The drawing is going to take place this Friday and, as always, all the money raised will be donated to a local public school. If nobody claims the guitar within 48 hours we’ll keep the raffle going, play more games, get more entries and then pull another winner! This really is going to be an awesome time and I’m extremely amped up to see our good friend, Toussaint The Liberator rock the stage. Me and Lori were vibing out to some Toussaint last night on our way to the Mothers of Rock event at Umass Lowell. She didnt even realize that Toussaint was the same man who previously performed with the popular group, ‘Soulive’. Heres an absolute classic song by Soulive feat. Toussaint on the vocals of course!

The Art of Comedy

It’s not so often that you hear people describe comedy as an art or comedians as artists. This is probably because we generally relate the performing arts to dramatical performances, either on stage or on the big screen. However, the more you think about it the clearer it becomes that great comedians, whether stand-up comics or comedic actors, are some of the most talented performers out there today. A favorite of mine lately is the hilarious new show, ‘La La Land’, featuring British comedy star, Marc Wootton. The idea is similar to that of ‘Da Ali G Show’ in terms of using different characters in real situations with real people. However, Wootton’s use of his brilliant improv skills and wild style is what makes the show work in its own original way. Definitely a must see in my eyes, heres the trailer…

One form of comedy that I have always been a huge fan of is stand-up. I was up late the other night and caught one of my all time favorite stand-up specials, ‘The Kings of Comedy’. I remember watching this back in high school and being in tears laughing with my friends. Its amazing how after all this time I can still watch the whole thing and everything is just as funny as the first time.

Another one of my favorite comedians, Bill Burr, is actually coming to Boston on May 7th at The Wilbur Theater. I guarantee you I’ll be there but if you’re looking for a good show and a ton of laughs then I suggest you grab a ticket. He always has a huge turnout when he comes to Boston, since he’s from this area, so dont sleep on getting tickets!

Art of the Mixtape

I recently had a conversation about “the art of the mixtape” with a friend of mine. She said even though mixtapes still exist and are easy to create, especially in the mp3 digital age, nothing will compare to original cassette mixtape. I have to agree with that. Before Napster or torrent sites my cousins and I would call all of the Boston radio stations and request our favorite songs so we could pop in a cassette and steal music the good ol’ fashioned way. The quality was bad & sometimes we mis-timed when to press record and stop but that gave the mix character!

I love homemade presents that have personal meaning and have never been the kind of girl who expects diamonds or expensive gifts for birthdays or special holidays. If you really want to catch my attention, make me a mixtape! Just think of everything you can express through music; You can tell your love how you feel through careful song selection, you can create a killer party mix or roadtrip collection or even compile the perfect sleepy-time jams to drift off to Lala land to.

Mixtapes have basically been replaced by playlists on our ipods. Same purpose, different context. One is not better than the other but I really do miss the days of guerilla mixtapery (ok I made that up but you get my point).

Mixtapes were the inspiration behind CAVATA’s “Its A Wrap” tee, actually. Its funny, I thought about making an old-school cassette mixtape the other day and then realized I have an ipod soundsystem (sans cassette player) and haven’t seen a cassette tape for sale in years. Bummer. Back to iTunes!

Shutter Island

When the credits started to roll and the house lights came on, all I could think of was how much I didn’t like Shutter Island. I mean, there were only 2 possible endings, he’s crazy or he’s not. Depending on how well you followed the movie and picked up on the little hints, it can get a little confusing but I feel like I expected more…especially since its a Scorsese film.

The whole time I was waiting for that elusive “Ah ha!” moment where everything comes together but instead of an “Oh my god, I get it now!” feeling I felt more like, “Ehh, ok, I saw that coming.” After talking about the movie and hearing other perspectives on the ending I have a better appreciation for Shutter Island but it definitely lacks in some areas. Don’t go into this expecting a definitive moment a la The Sixth Sense or “Soylent Green is peeeoooppple!” because it doesn’t happen. But, if you like endings that are open to interpretation and require a little thinking this might be the film for you.

Overall, I give Shutter Island points for the acting, character development, cinematography, etc. but the plot just wasn’t there for me. I give it a 6.5/10. You left me hangin’, Marty!

Boston, Massachusetts is an amazing city; not only is it rich in American history there’s also no shortage of cultural, visual and performing arts venues. I’ve lived around Boston my entire life yet I still have not experienced everything this city has to offer!

I’ll admit that I go out to see more music than I do theaters or museums so I’ve been making a better effort to change that! Whether you’re just passing through Boston, visiting on vacation or are a Beantown native, make sure to check out at least a few of these amazing places (and definitely take the T or a cab because parking costs loot!)

Breaking Benjamin, 3 Days Grace, Flyleaf

Tomorrow my little bro, Dan, and I (note: I will always call him my little bro even though he’s 22) are heading to Lowell, MA for the Breaking Benjamin, Three Days Grace & Flyleaf concert at the Tsongas Arena. I went to school at UMass Lowell and had a craptastic part-time concession stand job at the Tsongas yet I’ve never seen a show there! Do you have ANY idea how annoying it was to work in a concession area that had no clear view of the stage? I’m usually a top notch employee but I ended up getting at least 2 written warnings because I kept leaving my station to watch the shows.

Back to the point of this post! The best part is Dannyboy hooked us up with Platinum VIP passes that include a meet & greet with the bands. As much as I love neo-soul & hip-hop I’ve been hooked on rock music for the past few months; I tend to go through waves of genre bias sometimes. I picked up the new Breaking Benjamin and Flyleaf and still have them in constant rotation bewteen Erykah Badu, Bad Rabbits & Mystic in my car.

Flyleaf is technically a Christian band (and some say 3DG & BB are, too) and some people steer away from them because of this but it really makes no difference to me. I’m not a religious person at all but that doesn’t mean I can’t listen to gospel music, right? I actually enjoy listening to the different kinds of lyrics a Christian band puts out because there are all sorts of different ways to interpret the song’s meaning(s). Plus, last time I checked a guitar chord had no religious affiliations. Lead singer, Lacey, is fan-freaking-tastic, too, and her voice sends shivers up my spine. Such a cute, diminutive chick with a powerful voice = I’m in love.
