As much as we say we celebrate individuality and creativity in the music industry, the truth is a great deal of tunes churned out these days by “artists” are nothing more than regurgitations of generic pop formulas. I’m not commenting on whether this music is “good” or “bad,” I’m simply making the point that most of mainstream music conforms to particular styles and artists who are “different” end up becoming a flavor of the month rather than a musical staple. For those who take the leap the end result can be praise, ridicule or even a mix of both. “Erykah Badu has seen both sides of this game. She was celebrated for her breakthrough debut Baduizm, but then neatly shuffled into the box that was the media buzzword “Neo-Soul.” Critics on one hand praised the emotional honesty of her art but at the same time questioned her personal relationship choices. Throughout it all, Badu has maintained the ability to stay true to vision and that tradition continues on her latest release New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh) (Universal Motown).
I feel like I have found the PERFECT chill CD for my summer; laid-back, behind-the-beat grooves, sensual and seductive vocals and a sense of honesty you really don’t encounter with many artists in the same way as Badu. New Amerykah Part 2’s production is more soulful and R&B-based despite retaining Hip-Hop producers in 9th Wonder, J Dilla, and Ta’Raach. That’s a credit to their ingenuity and Erykah’s versatility. Where 4th World War engaged and challenged listeners more on political and social levels Return of the Ankh reflects Badu’s vulnerability when confronted with different aspects of love. Throw this record on, dim the lights and let it soak in. This is not music you put on as backround noise at a party; I mean, you could, but you’d be missing out on the bigger picture. Erykah Badu is an experience in chillology…and if you think I sound silly for saying chillology you should pump the album and I’m sure you’ll understand by the last track. I give this release 5/5 stars and two very big thumbs up.
