J The S “The Last Days”

J The S, formerly “Jake The Snake”, has been a staple in the Boston hip-hop community over the past five plus years. From his early days smashing The Super Bowl Rap Battles, to great releases like his international debut “Strategy Of The Crown” in 2006, to his more recent endeavors on the New York City mixtape circuit (Two releases over the past two years featuring collaborations with artists like Jadakiss, Joell Ortiz, Nipsey Hussle, Kool G Rap, B.o.B, Saigon to name a few), J has never stopped repping the hometown team.

His latest work, “The Last Days”, explores varying themes of society and struggle but also takes time out to explore J’s introspective nature of his own life. It is hands down his most complete project yet and being as big a fan as I am, that is saying ALOT.

J The S is one of the more fearless emcees I have encountered during my meanderings in Hip-Hop. Release after release, J The S has consistently shown he is not the type of artist to sacrifice authenticity in favor of commercial success.

In seemingly scripted fashion, “The Last Days” release date was supposed to be January 18th of this week, however, feeling so strongly about the recent SOPA protests, J The S felt it more important to delay his release a day in recognition of the online communities concerns. This of course was coincidence, but appropriately fitting for an artist like J. From his early work in Boston Public Schools to countless fundraisers for anti-violence groups all the way to recent appearances (most of them NON music related) at Occupy Boston, J The S is constantly entrenched in fighting for change.

In an era where much of Hip-Hop’s authenticity is questioned, J The S remains an important artist, one who LIVES what he speaks and is never afraid to ask the tough questions. In my mind, this is the true soul of Hip-Hop, a voice for the unheard, unafraid and focused on making a difference.

“The Last Days” is an extremely quality work with a phenomenal sense of cohesion. There are also some great guest appearances including Styles P, Pill and Emilio Rojas just to name a few. So I just wanted to reintroduce myself; my name is Nat, aka Natural, aka Nasty Nat. Thanks to my good friends, Lori and Pete, I’ve been a regular in and around the Cavata Regime.

I’ve decided to join the website ranks and begin to post from time to time. I will be adding my picks for hip-hop music and hopefully even reviewing a couple of albums that have recently dropped.

To mark this glorious occasion, my first post in Cavata history I am adding a video below. The beat is off the critically acclaimed A$aP Rocky mixtape released just last year. The production on that album is some of the finest all around work released last year. My favorite song off the mixtape was “Trilla” so I released a quick freestyle just minutes ago. I hope you enjoy it and you will all be hearing from me soon enough!

Adriano Masciarelli & “617″

Say “Hello” to the newest member of the CAVATA family, Adriano Masciarelli. A Massachusetts native, actor Adriano Masciarelli has been a part of what we here in Boston like to call “Hollywood East” for quite some time now. Having worked on such films as “The Rude, The Mad and The Funny,” “The Comeback” and “NorEaster,” he is now taking his vision to the next level- in front of AND behind the camera. Having recently completed writing his first screenplay for his short film, “617,” Adriano is joining forces with CAVATA to tell the story of life on the streets of Southie. Starring local actors Bobby Kenney, Hannah Johnson, Brian McCarthy, Jay Dimare, Chris Lemieux, Lexie Sugar and with his acting debut, Adriano’s brother, Jason Sylva, “617″ is gearing up to be an amazing project with an honest perspective on South Boston life depicted by the people who have lived it firsthand. With CAVATA recently signed on as the official Wardrobe Consultant for “617,” you know you’ll be seeing CAVATA tees (some one-offs made exclusively for “617″) throughout the project!

Casting for “617″ is being handled by non other than South Shore Casting’s Jodi Purdy-Quinlan who has worked on such films as “Gone Baby Gone, ” “Pink Panther 2,” “The Town,” “Here Comes The Boom” and “The Game Plan,” among many others. Happy Birthday, MTV. Although you have been a staple in my pop culture life for 26 years, I feel as though you are but a hollow shell of the network you once were. The network is called Music Television. MUSIC Television! Not, underaged pregnancy TV or spoiled rich kid’s birthday TV or Laguna Beach TV but Music Television. Where did it all go wrong? I remember watching Nirvana, Mariah Carey, Alice in Chains and Lauryn Hill Unplugged when I was a kid. Bands today can’t even perform their own songs without auto tune and 50 backup dancers and the younger audience cares more about a 4′9″ alcoholic oompa loompa who can’t find her way to the beach than quality tunes. I can’t be too mad, though. Even when you began to stray from the music I was still on board for a while there. Original Road Rules/Real World, Tom Green, Daria, Beavis and Butthead and many more…all good memories. You may not be the same MTV I grew up with but I shall always cherish the good times. No matter where you end up or what you evolve (or devolve) into there is one thing I know for sure, MTV. Kurt Loder will still be doing the news. Happy 3-0, big guy.

New releases coming soon!

In the next few weeks CAVATA will be releasing our SUMMER 2011 line which includes new tees, tank tops and exclusive products, some only printed for guys and others only for the ladies. If you want to be one of the first people to get your hands on these goodies the only way you can do so is by coming to our SUMMER RELEASE PARTY tomorrow night at VAULT! Pete, myself and our crew are going to be rocking a few of the brand new designs that have only been seen by a select few. The show starts at 7 and goes until they shut us down. With performances by Natural, J The S, Dutch Rebelle and Leah V on the 1’s and 2’s this show is guaranteed to be packed.

With this new release we experimented with a few new printing techniques and blanks. You may notice that some of the inks used for our logo tees are slightly thicker than what we’ve used in the past. I’ve noticed that water-based inks with a soft feel look great when they are fresh off the presses but tend to fade when washed multiple times. This was no bueno in my book! We want our customers looking sharp every time they rock their CAVATA threads and this new ink is the perfect solution. We’re also experimenting with the type of blanks we print on with this release. Some tees are still printed on American Apparel but a few tees and our new tanks are printed on Anvil which are slightly larger but still very high quality. We’ll have a link to a detailed sizing chart next to every product to make sure you all know the specifications before ordering. We hope to see you all at the release party tomorrow but if you can’t attend then hopefully this little preview will tide you over until our official online release!
