When it comes to college radio, some are great and some are, well, not. There are a few, however, that truly push the programming envelope. Boston’s WERS 88.9 FM is a great example of the former. WERS 88.9 FM is Emerson College’s award-winning radio station; Student-run and professionally-managed, it serves New England an eclectic mix of musical genres and more live performances than any other station in the region. Programming includes 20 different styles of music, calendars of events, public service announcements, news, and special events of interest to the College community and beyond. Great DJs, diverse programming, LIVE on-air performances, commitment to the community…what more can you ask for?

My favorite shows are Rockers (banging Reggae weekdays 7-10pm), 88.9@Night (real, commercial-free hip-hop and 10pm-2am) and The Secret Spot (classic soul, R&B and slow jams Saturdays and Sundays 8pm-midnight). Although we all have our iPods its great to hear new, independent music you would never hear on the mainstream radio stations. Variety is essential! And if you’re not in the car, they stream LIVE online, too. Check it out, you won’t be disappointed.

A few weeks ago my friend, Teryn, asked me to come and sing a few songs to open up a poetry reading. This wasn’t an ordinary poetry slam, though; Teryn is the director of a program in Lynn, Massachusetts that supports homeless teen mothers and their children. I had heard so much about the program and the girls so I was more than happy to be a part of it. Some of these girls had their babies when they were as young as 14 or 15 so to hear them recite poems about their families, children and hardships was an extremely deep experience. Even if they couldn’t articulate exactly what they wanted to say with the right words you could feel the emotion break though any grammatical or linguistic barriers that were present. There were even a few girls who could barely speak English so they had their Spanish-written poems translated by other girls. Still, even through broken English, these girls came out of their metaphorical shells and spoke from the heart. Its amazing what people will express when they write a song, a poem, create a painting or a dance; its like everything they were too afraid to say in a conversation suddenly pours from them when its interpretted through art!

I had been going through a bit of a “blaaaah” period up until that day; you know, a few ups and downs, not exactly sure where the road was leading. It wasn’t until I stopped focusing on my own problems and opened myself up to this new experience that I felt more happiness by helping others through art. We all feel a little ”blaaah” sometimes but I highly recommend the next time you feel like you’re not quite sure what to do with your life or you have a problem you don’t know how to deal with, take a step back and practice some compassion. For me, music has always been my way of communicating exactly how I felt and singing for those girls and listening to their words created a uniquely touching experience we all felt good about. But this doesn’t mean you HAVE to use music or art. If you like sports, cars, politics, have religion, etc., use that! Sometimes when we step back and broaden our perspective it helps us see an even bigger picture in the long run. Thank you, Teryn! I had an amazing time and I’ll definitely be coming back for another visit!

Have you ever had a massage? A professional massage, I mean. A few months ago I was feeling really sore from Lupus so my friend, John Dicenzo, offered me a free massage at Eternal Healing in Marshfield which he runs with Monika Uremovik and Erin Kearney. This place is amazing; from the eclectic, comfy arm chairs in the waiting room to the beautiful lighting and artwork, I was very impressed with the level of detail and care they put into making their business as inviting as possible. And the massage? Absolutely heavenly. Not only do they offer all different types of massages they also have alternative therapies like reiki healing, which John and Monika both introduced me to, polarity and beach flower remedies. Definitely go check out Eternal Healing in Marshfield, MA and support a local business run by three great young entrepreneurs!

“Fake it until you make it.” What does this really mean? Sometimes also referred to “Act as if,” its a common catchphrase that means to imitate confidence so that as the confidence produces success it generates real confidence. The purpose is to avoid getting stuck in a self fulfilling prophecy related to one’s fear of not being confident. I fully endorse this way of thinking, after all, when you come from a place of positivity, positivity tends to come full circle, but it also got me thinking about the literalness behind the words and how a lot of entrepreneurs and artists act these days.

In the indie clothing/accessory/streetwear scene, a new brand pops up every other day. You can’t go on Twitter, Facebook or various chat forums without hearing someone brag about how many celebrities wear their threads or how many orders they have to ship the next day. Its wonderful to read stories about successful business ventures but, let’s be honest, the majority of these posts are highly exaggerated and usually come from those with inflated egos. Its one thing to be proud of success and to share it with friends, customers and fellow entrepreneurs, but I find real honesty is lacking with a good number of brands and artists nowadays. If you sold 50 copies of your debut album at a show, be proud of that, but don’t straight up lie and claim you sold 500. If you received a few orders for tee shirts over the weekend, that’s awesome! But don’t hype up your brand to be something it isn’t (yet!) What I’m trying to say is be proud of what you’ve accomplished but try and avoid the pitfalls of bravado.

With CAVATA, I wanted to create a brand that people can feel good about wearing and also supports a good cause. We’ve been lucky enough to have artists like Lady Sovereign wear our apparel but we’re far more interested in promoting the local artists we support and our loyal customers who have helped us make this brand into what it is today. If I could give only one piece of advice it would be to always keep things positive by being honest and true to what you/your brand stands for. That’s it. The End.

If you’re into gaming, and I bet you are, check out my friend Ryan Horman’s new venture, www.RespawnGaming.com; a premiere gaming community with the ability to host LAN parties and competitions. In other words, hosting games over a network to give players the ability to compete against each other without sitting in front of the same screen. You might be asking, “Can’t I already do this through XBox Live, etc.?” Sure, but what’s different about Respawn is they host competitions with actual prizes rather than only playing for the top score. Plus, as Ryan says, home-users don’t always have the “elite” hardware for optimum gaming which Respawn gaming can provide. Respawn is a brand new company with limitless possibilties to tap into the gaming community and I’m extremely excited to see how this brand develops in the next year!

Ryan and I met at UMass Lowell as undergrads; I was, at the time, a Freshman Music major and Ryan was, at the time, a Sophomore Electrical Engineering major. Funny how you think you know what you want to “be” when you grow up and have to pick a major when you’re just a kid. Luckily, Ryan and I found our own paths which just so happened to lead down the road of entrepreneurialism!
So make sure to check out www.respawngaming.com where you can chat on their message boards, find the latest news about gaming and join one of the best up & coming gaming communities in New England! And sidenote: sweet whip, Ry!

As a lover of horror movies, I had very high hopes for the 2010 remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street. Unfortunately, this flick fell short….way short. Remakes of classic cult movies can be tricky; you don’t want to veer too far away from what made the movie successful in the first place but, then again, you don’t want a second-rate regurgitation of the original. The new Nightmare followed the formula of the latter and I actually found myself becoming bored rather than covering my mouth to hide my usual embarassing shreiks of fear (trust me, my ex-girlfriend hated seeing horror movies with me in theaters because I’d scream every 5 seconds and draw attention to us). Call me twisted but I enjoy a gore-fest when it comes to my horror movies and this did not deliver in the blood & guts department either. Everyone knows what happens (duh, its a remake) so one way to spice up the plot is to reinvent creeptastic new ways for victims to kick the bucket. Did this movie do this? Nope. Not even close.

And let’s not overlook the fact that Freddy is unrecognizeable. I compare the new Freddy to Johnny Depp’s interpretation of Willy Wonka; when someone has already portrayed a character to perfection you have to find a different interpretation in order for a remake to have its own identity. I’m okay with the fact that he didn’t look exactly the same in the 2010 version but this new Freddy looked far too much like a realistic burn victim which, for me, didn’t work. However, the horror genre today focuses on killers that are far less “goofy” than the original ‘84 Freddy so I can see why they wanted to give the character a unique twist rather than try to emulate such an distinctive slasher icon. Still, Freddy wasn’t just a burn victim, he was a supernatural psycho killer and the realism of his face conflicted with his character.

Still, even with a new take on Freddy, this movie did nothing for me. I feel like the writers and director took advantage of the fact that we all know the character of Freddy Krueger and used it as an excuse to avoid any character development. There were a few redeeming scenes but, for the most part, it was utterly predictable and unimaginative. The only people who will be truly scared and entertained by this flick are the kids who were too young to see the original (hey, even I grew up with the original and it came out a year before I was born!)

Overall, I give this flick 2/5 stars. What a shame. Robert Englund should be thankful he wasn’t a part of this.

Sweet dreams!

Saturday Night Live has always been one of my favorite shows but ever since the final glory days of Will Ferrel, Molly Shannon, Cheri Oteri, Traci Morgan, etc. there hasn’t been a solid cast that could deliver week after week. SNL has been on the air for over three decades so I understand not every cast, sketch or season is going to have the right chemistry but I found myself saying “why is this funny?” and changing the channel. When I was in middle school and early highschool, my friends and I were too young and poor to go out so we’d all watch SNL together and these were the BEST years of SNL. This season, however, has slowly been bringing me back especially after this Saturday’s hilarious appearance by Betty White. THIS is the SNL I remember. This is the SNL that had me yelling “Oh my god” and spitting my drink out and almost peeing my pants. In honor of Ms. White and the sketch comedy show that probably helped keep me out of many shenanigans as a kid, I bring you my favorite SNL characters!
