J The S, formerly “Jake The Snake”, has been a staple in the Boston hip-hop community over the past five plus years. From his early days smashing The Super Bowl Rap Battles, to great releases like his international debut “Strategy Of The Crown” in 2006, to his more recent endeavors on the New York City mixtape circuit (Two releases over the past two years featuring collaborations with artists like Jadakiss, Joell Ortiz, Nipsey Hussle, Kool G Rap, B.o.B, Saigon to name a few), J has never stopped repping the hometown team.

His latest work, “The Last Days”, explores varying themes of society and struggle but also takes time out to explore J’s introspective nature of his own life. It is hands down his most complete project yet and being as big a fan as I am, that is saying ALOT.

J The S is one of the more fearless emcees I have encountered during my meanderings in Hip-Hop. Release after release, J The S has consistently shown he is not the type of artist to sacrifice authenticity in favor of commercial success.

In seemingly scripted fashion, “The Last Days” release date was supposed to be January 18th of this week, however, feeling so strongly about the recent SOPA protests, J The S felt it more important to delay his release a day in recognition of the online communities concerns. This of course was coincidence, but appropriately fitting for an artist like J. From his early work in Boston Public Schools to countless fundraisers for anti-violence groups all the way to recent appearances (most of them NON music related) at Occupy Boston, J The S is constantly entrenched in fighting for change.

In an era where much of Hip-Hop’s authenticity is questioned, J The S remains an important artist, one who LIVES what he speaks and is never afraid to ask the tough questions. In my mind, this is the true soul of Hip-Hop, a voice for the unheard, unafraid and focused on making a difference.

“The Last Days” is an extremely quality work with a phenomenal sense of cohesion. There are also some great guest appearances including Styles P, Pill and Emilio Rojas just to name a few. So I just wanted to reintroduce myself; my name is Nat, aka Natural, aka Nasty Nat. Thanks to my good friends, Lori and Pete, I’ve been a regular in and around the Cavata Regime.

I’ve decided to join the website ranks and begin to post from time to time. I will be adding my picks for hip-hop music and hopefully even reviewing a couple of albums that have recently dropped.

To mark this glorious occasion, my first post in Cavata history I am adding a video below. The beat is off the critically acclaimed A$aP Rocky mixtape released just last year. The production on that album is some of the finest all around work released last year. My favorite song off the mixtape was “Trilla” so I released a quick freestyle just minutes ago. I hope you enjoy it and you will all be hearing from me soon enough!

Entrepreneurial Emersonians

I love featuring friends and former classmates who have also taken the entrepreneurial plunge. In this post, I’d like to introduce you to two extraordinary women: Kristin Lajeunesse and Lindsey Guest. I met these two lovely ladies during graduate school at Emerson College in 2007 and to say that their current endeavors are impressive would be, well, an understatement. They have supported CAVATA since I launched the brand in 2008 and am more than happy to promote their creative projects now. Congratulations, Kristin and Lindsey. I’m so proud of the both of you! IMC-4E, ladies.

Kristin is currently traveling across the United States on a year-long journey chronicling the country’s most delectable vegan restaurants in her blog Will Travel For Vegan Food. Kristin was able to fund her idea through Kickstarter.com, the world’s largest funding platform for creative projects, and raised over $12,000! In her words, “There are few things that I enjoy more than discovering new (to me) vegan restaurants. It’s true. I’m the embarrassing friend who giggles over having more than one vegan choice on a menu, bounces up and down just at the thought of vegan cinnamon buns and especially soft serve ice cream and takes multiple pictures of food.” When she comes back to Boston I’m making her take me to her favorite Beantown vegan spot!

Adriano Masciarelli & “617″

Say “Hello” to the newest member of the CAVATA family, Adriano Masciarelli. A Massachusetts native, actor Adriano Masciarelli has been a part of what we here in Boston like to call “Hollywood East” for quite some time now. Having worked on such films as “The Rude, The Mad and The Funny,” “The Comeback” and “NorEaster,” he is now taking his vision to the next level- in front of AND behind the camera. Having recently completed writing his first screenplay for his short film, “617,” Adriano is joining forces with CAVATA to tell the story of life on the streets of Southie. Starring local actors Bobby Kenney, Hannah Johnson, Brian McCarthy, Jay Dimare, Chris Lemieux, Lexie Sugar and with his acting debut, Adriano’s brother, Jason Sylva, “617″ is gearing up to be an amazing project with an honest perspective on South Boston life depicted by the people who have lived it firsthand. With CAVATA recently signed on as the official Wardrobe Consultant for “617,” you know you’ll be seeing CAVATA tees (some one-offs made exclusively for “617″) throughout the project!

3LF Releases “Always Anyway”

It’s been five years and two albums since Three Legged Fox came together as a four piece band in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia PA. Kyle Wareham, Kory Kochersperger and Mark Carson have played more than 350 shows and have supported almost every major national reggae band that America has to offer. Looking back on their history, Wareham (lead vocalist and rhythm guitars) explains, “We’ve come to understand that those first five years were the groundwork, the foundation for this year, this new album and ultimately this moment.” The new album he is referring to is Three Legged Fox’s third studio album entitled “Always Anyway” now available for download on iTunes!

“We’ve made the raw album, we’ve made the traditional reggae album with horns and organs and such. But shortly after “Not as Far” (the band’s second record produced by Chris D’Beneditto) we started to realize who we were and the kind of music we wanted to play. We’re an alternative rock band…..an alternative reggae/rock band. In knowing that, and wanting to keep moving down that road, we began writing songs from a micro sense. We tightened up, started building songs in a rock structure. The demo process alone was 10 or 11 months,” says Kochersperger. Wareham adds, “In terms of how it sounds, we wanted to make it big. There’s a lot of guitar, a lot of vocals, some synth. A lot of people identify that as a standard pop format but for us it’s brand new because our previous albums were all so simple.”

It’s 2011 and Three Legged Fox is ready. They’ve dedicated over a year and a half to writing and recording “Always Anyway” and they did it exactly the way they wanted to. “I’m nervous and I’m excited for this album. I’ve believed in our previous efforts but I’ll go down with this one. If someone who’d never heard of us could only hear one of our albums, I’d no doubt give them ‘Always Anyway’,” says Wareham.

Dutch ReBelle releases new video for “Beantown Ish/Ketchup”

CAVATA supporter and Famous Nobodies fam, Dutch ReBelle released her first mixtape “Beauty vs. The Beast” just a few months ago and is already shaking up the Boston music scene. With the release her new video for “Beantown Ish” featuring her signature freestyle “Ketchup,” Dutch is preparing for an unforgettable summer.

According to Dutch, the concept of BeanTown Ish is to represent the true Boston environment and its cultural influence on us all. “It’s the blueprint to a BeanTown state of mind.”

Dutch ReBelle remains unsigned but is now back in the studio working on her second project, “Married To The Music” which is set to be released late summer 2011. With this project she lyrically attacks the music industry head on, sparing nobody that gets in her way. Recently named ” Best Female Hip Hop Artist” by the New England Urban Music Awards, Dutch is clearly just getting started. YA YA YAAAOOOOW!
