Chuuwee Invades Boston

As many of you know, the Queen Of The Bean, Ms. Dutch Rebelle, recently signed with Amaglam Digital. The label, headed by CEO Next, has an impressive resume since it’s birth a few years ago. The label has also had a MAJOR impact on the success of many heavyweights in hip-hop inlcuding Wale, Currensy, Joe Budden and Max B. Some months before Dutchie signed, they signed an emcee from Sacramento, California that goes by the name of Chuuwee. If you haven’t heard of him yet, get hip. Now.

The first night I saw him was Dutch’s signing announcement. Although he murdered his live performance, much of the night was overshadowed by the celebrations of Dutch making her big break. Luckily, Chuuwee and Amalgam have launched a full scale attack on the NE region. I’ve seen Chuuwee six different times in the past three or four weeks. He’s been killing stages everywhere from Church, to Boston University, The Middle East all the way to Rhode Island. Not only is this kid’s music something else, he is one of the better hip-hop performers you will ever have the chance to see. His onstage presence is a force to be reckoned with; an impressive display of conscious flow, fantastic crowd interaction, and hilarious dance moves all joining forces for an undeniable sense of energy. He is definitely something special.

April 23rd marked the date for his first official Amalgam Digital Release, “Crown Me King,” which dropped on Livemixtapes.com and is available for download right now. Chuuwee keeps the features list relatively short but the talent level of his features is superior (especially an absolute snipejob of a feature from Boston’s own Charmingly Ghetto. A phenomenal track). The 17 track mixtape features hard-edged production with cutting-edge rhyme schemes and phenomenal diversity throughout. Chuuwee hits everything from the neo- new school boom-bap to conscious heavy “trap” flow. It is a welcome addition to his already impressive catalouge (including an amazing collaboration mixtape entitled “Hot and Ready” with famed Sacremento Producer Lee Bannon).

This past Sunday Chuuwee held a private listening party at Boston’s “Laced” store where listeners got a chance to see him rock live and explain the ideas behind each track. Do yourselves a favor and check out his brand new release NOW. It appears Amalgam Digital is launching a full scale attack on the game–and with two heavyweights like Dutch Rebelle and Chuuwee, you better be ready for it. The roster is Grade A, the live performances are dope and something tells me this is just the beginning. #AmalgamBack

Chris Brook of Famous Nobodies dropped his highly anticipated video yesterday for “Show Of Hands.” The smash single (produced by the multi-talented Mark Merren) dropped back in February and now we are blessed with the visuals. The video is very to the point: It’s a party. I was lucky enough to be a part of the shoot and it was a great night all the way around. Plenty of good people, drinks and music. “Show Of Hands” is a smooth and catchy record that has become a crowd favorite at all the FN shows. Enjoy the video!!!

Next up we have the first video off Notoriety’s highly acclaimed mix tape “Road Trippin’, Kool-Aid Sippin’, Chicken, Beef Patties, And Herb” Hosted by CR The Beast. I recently caught Notoriety over at The Hard Rock Cafe competing for a shot to play live in London. The Music Drives Us Foundation had judges on hand as Notoriety made it to the final round. I have now had the privilege of seeing Notoriety on various occasions but this was hands down there most fantastic performance. Incredible Chuck was on another level that night, crooning to the crowd with soulful perfection while Vydel seemed to feed of that energy in a brilliant manner, a perfect combination. It was here I first heard the song “Somewhere Else” and it instantly became my favorite joint of their’s to date. The video is a nice and simple visual that lends the viewer the opportunity to connect more with the songs soulful core, a nice ode to the places we all come from. I love this song. Books + surgical tools = amazing art

Using knives, tweezers and surgical tools, Brian Dettmer carves one page at a time. Nothing inside the out-of-date encyclopedias, medical journals, illustration books, or dictionaries is relocated or implanted, only removed. Dettmer manipulates the pages and spines to form the shape of his sculptures and also folds, bends, rolls, and stacks multiple books to create completely original forms.

In his words Brian says, “My work is a collaboration with the existing material and its past creators and the completed pieces expose new relationships of the book’s internal elements exactly where they have been since their original conception.”

Simply amazing.

“Married to the Music” listening party

Last night I attended a listening party at LACED BOSTON for the beautiful and talented Dutch ReBelle’s latest project, “Married to the Music.” This was a private, invite only event so I feel especially honored to be considered one of Dutch’s people. From the first track to the closer, “Married to the Music” is on point. We won’t give away too much as the project drops for FREE tomorrow, however, the feature list is nothing short of phenomenal combining a great mix of local talent on board the project along with Dutch’s prowess for verbal expertise. As usual, she applies whit and intelligence to her craft, while also maintaining a sharp ear for production throughout the EP. The project is great. A top notch effort from the female emcee. If you want to be like Dutch Rebelle someday and you are an aspiring hip-hop artist, check out audio production schools for hip hop music production classes that can teach you how to experiment and perform as an independent hip-hop artist.

The same effort goes for the entire Famous Nobodies x Black Roses x Dutch Rebelle movement. The people in attendance last night really speak volumes about their grind. DJ Chubby Chubbs, DJ 2Timez, Showoff Representative “Reks”, Amandi Music, KillerBoomBox.com, Video Directior Joe Politics, Boston Phoenix writer Erin Baldassari were among just a few names of an increasingly buzzing hip-hop scene. Artists and DJs also included Mark Merren, Daz-One, Natural, KaoVanny, Khalifa, Ras Beans, Surefire Caliber to name a few more. The place was rockin’ but all extremely attentive to the first precious listens of “Married To The Music”. The Black Roses did a wonderful job ensuring everyone had a drink in their hand and DJ Real P kept the place buzzing with a phenomenal set. Further on down the line attendees were lucky enough to catch live performances by Brook, Dutch Rebelle, DJ Real P, Khalifa, Ras Beans, Ofats and Natural. A seemingly fitting scene for a community that seems to grow more supportive by the day. For a city that catches as much flak about “hate” as Boston does, it appears this crowd affiliated with Famous Nobodies is making it a point to change that. There was a tremendous amount of talent in the room, however, nothing trumped the levels of love and support that permeated LACED BOSTON last night. The support and appreciation for Dutch was tremendous. As for Dutch Rebelle herself, I can’t speak more highly of this amazing Beantown bombshell. The woman is going places, mark my words. “Married to the Music” drops TOMORROW!!! March 6th. If you’re a fan of hip hop and want to hear some REAL Boston artistry, you need to check this out. Amazing producers and cameos are on this project that takes you on an emotional journey all of us as artists can relate to. Congrats, Dutchy. You did it again. Ya Ya Yaaooooww,

Trumpet the Harlot is a talented metal band based in northern Virginia that never ceases to impress audiences with its technicality, relentless speed and undying energetic live performances. Foxy Shazam- The Church of Rock And Roll

Statepress.com- “Welcome to the church of rock and roll!” screams Foxy Shazam’s Eric Sean Nally to start off the band’s newest album, “The Church of Rock and Roll.” This might sound pretty ambitious, but it is actually a fairly accurate statement for a band that considers itself “the Michael Jordan of Rock N’ Roll.” Foxy Shazam’s fourth studio album sets the bar even higher than any of its previous work.

Continuing their streak of glam rock infused with elements of soul and R&B, Foxy Shazam has produced a truly unique album that is way too much fun from the first listen. Along with the title track that includes a full choir, standout tracks include “Holy Touch,” “Last Chance at Love” and “Wasted Feelings.” “Holy Touch” shows off Nally’s Freddy Mercury-esque vocal range and grabs a listener’s attention with his impressive falsetto toward the end of the song.

AbsolutePunk perfectly describes “Last Chance at Love” as “illegally catchy.” The band pushes its own boundaries with this album, drawing from influences such as Nally’s hometown of Cincinnati in “The Streets.” While their last album was pedal-to-the-metal fast, this one takes the time to slow things down and reflect. “Forever Together” describes Nally’s conflict between the life of a musician and his life as a husband and father of two boys.

Nally’s vocals are not the only impressive component of this album. Guitarist Loren Turner really shines on this record with blistering guitar solos, especially in the final track, “Freedom.” Horn player Alex Nauth adds just the right amount of soul and funk to the album.

Foxy’s goal with this album is to blow the minds of their listeners, and they have succeeded. “The Church of Rock and Roll” contains no filler tracks and is best when listened to all the way through.

J The S “The Last Days”

J The S, formerly “Jake The Snake”, has been a staple in the Boston hip-hop community over the past five plus years. From his early days smashing The Super Bowl Rap Battles, to great releases like his international debut “Strategy Of The Crown” in 2006, to his more recent endeavors on the New York City mixtape circuit (Two releases over the past two years featuring collaborations with artists like Jadakiss, Joell Ortiz, Nipsey Hussle, Kool G Rap, B.o.B, Saigon to name a few), J has never stopped repping the hometown team.

His latest work, “The Last Days”, explores varying themes of society and struggle but also takes time out to explore J’s introspective nature of his own life. It is hands down his most complete project yet and being as big a fan as I am, that is saying ALOT.

J The S is one of the more fearless emcees I have encountered during my meanderings in Hip-Hop. Release after release, J The S has consistently shown he is not the type of artist to sacrifice authenticity in favor of commercial success.

In seemingly scripted fashion, “The Last Days” release date was supposed to be January 18th of this week, however, feeling so strongly about the recent SOPA protests, J The S felt it more important to delay his release a day in recognition of the online communities concerns. This of course was coincidence, but appropriately fitting for an artist like J. From his early work in Boston Public Schools to countless fundraisers for anti-violence groups all the way to recent appearances (most of them NON music related) at Occupy Boston, J The S is constantly entrenched in fighting for change.

In an era where much of Hip-Hop’s authenticity is questioned, J The S remains an important artist, one who LIVES what he speaks and is never afraid to ask the tough questions. In my mind, this is the true soul of Hip-Hop, a voice for the unheard, unafraid and focused on making a difference.

“The Last Days” is an extremely quality work with a phenomenal sense of cohesion. There are also some great guest appearances including Styles P, Pill and Emilio Rojas just to name a few. So I just wanted to reintroduce myself; my name is Nat, aka Natural, aka Nasty Nat. Thanks to my good friends, Lori and Pete, I’ve been a regular in and around the Cavata Regime.

I’ve decided to join the website ranks and begin to post from time to time. I will be adding my picks for hip-hop music and hopefully even reviewing a couple of albums that have recently dropped.

To mark this glorious occasion, my first post in Cavata history I am adding a video below. The beat is off the critically acclaimed A$aP Rocky mixtape released just last year. The production on that album is some of the finest all around work released last year. My favorite song off the mixtape was “Trilla” so I released a quick freestyle just minutes ago. I hope you enjoy it and you will all be hearing from me soon enough!

Entrepreneurial Emersonians

I love featuring friends and former classmates who have also taken the entrepreneurial plunge. In this post, I’d like to introduce you to two extraordinary women: Kristin Lajeunesse and Lindsey Guest. I met these two lovely ladies during graduate school at Emerson College in 2007 and to say that their current endeavors are impressive would be, well, an understatement. They have supported CAVATA since I launched the brand in 2008 and am more than happy to promote their creative projects now. Congratulations, Kristin and Lindsey. I’m so proud of the both of you! IMC-4E, ladies.

Kristin is currently traveling across the United States on a year-long journey chronicling the country’s most delectable vegan restaurants in her blog Will Travel For Vegan Food.
